thinking about making a little list of ace discourse greatest hits
heres a short list of discourse main characters & general deranged discourse topics i thought of while i was meal prepping earlier:
- discourseprincesa who claimed to be an afab trans woman, justifying this by simply claiming to be intersex, and had her followers harass and suicide bait people on her behalf; shared for no reason a ton of super specific info about how exactly she was intersex incl anatomical details, which resulted in her giving out info that contradicted with itself and led to intersex people determining that based on the information she was providing she was lying about being intersex due to anatomical impossibilities and was also later caught faking her race from a photo she posted on her main account
- sobercommunist who was for a while like, THE exclusionist authority bc he was extremely willing to use his HIV+ status SPECIFICALLY against ace people just as a concept, and people hung onto him so hard they refused to acknowledge that he was chronically transphobic, racist, and misogynistic completely unprompted
- the discourse that started at “theres no age appropriate way to explain asexuality to someone under 18” and through midpoints like “all minors are asexual,” “no one under 18 feels sexual attraction,” and “if you feel sexual attraction and youre under 18 its because of trauma and you need help” ended at “sex education is pedophilia”
- people simultaneously holding the beliefs that casual sex is abusive & not having casual sex is homophobic
- the gd queer coffee shop discourse
- the dovecourse where a group of people made a queer flag with a dove on it and got accused of using nazi imagery because nazis used eagles
- the numerous transmisogynistic harassment campaigns
- people saying allosexual is a bad word because allosexuel means queer in quebec, something no quebecois person ive known has been able to corroborate
- people fully making up the idea that aspec means the autism spectrum despite this being easily provable untrue with a single google search
- people picking up SSA/SGA and then when pointed out to that both terms are used exclusively by concervative christians and especially mormons in the context of conversion therapy they claimed that its actually based on SGL (same gender loving) from AAVE, just a little to the left to be respectful,
- that horrific period of time when “having sex with an unwilling partner is equally bad as denying your partner sex” was seen as an acceptable stance to have
- who was that person who said that because their ex denied them affection as a form of emotional abuse they thought that ace people are abusers for not having sex with their partners because i remember people defended them up until the point they deleted
- people making up guys to get mad at like the hypothetical ace who would be triggered by seeing gay people kiss at pride
- “asexuals stole purple from bisexuals” leading to “bisexuals stole purple from lesbians”
- aces stealing the moon and also artemis
- fights between two high schoolers being framed as “dogpiling a minor”
- a series of allos remaking the ace flag because first they thought the purple was stolen & then that david jay created the ace flag. every single new flag was uglier than the previous one
- david jay being characterized as the person who gave birth to every asexual person on the planet instead of just some guy who ran a website in the early 2000s
- i have to rest now. i will be back with more memories.
If I may add a few of my favorites:
-Claiming that aspec identities are just for white people trying to be quirky, apparently trying to use the idea of being anti-racist as a way to shit on aspecs, and thereby denying non-white folks agency over their own identities??
-Claiming that it’s homophobic to call people “allosexual” because it “lumps them in with their oppressors”, which, again, is baffling to any non-white queer person who shares the community with white people, trans people who share the community with cis people, etc.
-Thomas Sanders, Tumblr’s golden boy at the time, being dropped like a hot potato by everyone literally within hours of making a post basically saying “bullying aspec people is bad”. I witnessed this one in real time it was really fucking bizarre
-Accusing Neil Gaiman of homophobia because he said Crowey and Azirawhateverthefuck idk I didn’t read it are in love but could possibly be interpreted as aspec if you want because they’re not human anyway
-People creating troll sockpuppet accounts in which they pretended to be aspec, posted really obviously absurd things that no actual aspec person would ever say, and then everyone else taking this as evidence that we’re cringey homophobes or whatever
-On the subject of “aces stealing the moon and Artemis”, people claiming that Artemis is “the only Greek goddess with hgay tendencies” which is hilariously untrue
oh this reminds me of:
- dan youtuberman being harassed relentlessly after he said “aces are valid” in response to someone asking how he feels about asexuality, bc that single statement switched his status from “probably fucking his best friend and we’re all going to be weird as hell about it” to “cishet man who needs to keep out of lgbt matters” instantly
My personal favorite one is the fact that “white cis woman pretends to be trans woman of color and uses the fake identity to be shitty toward ace people” actually happened twice, because as it turns out hivliving - you know, the hamilton aids fic writer? - also had an exclusionist sideblog
not to mention ace discourse was the epicenter of the modern “queer is a slur” movement, because Queer is inclusive of ace/aro people and therefore Bad, which was absolutely wild to watch happen in realtime
- aces stole dragons from children, whatever the fuck that means
- allosexual and monosexual are slurs (again because they “lump queer* people in with their oppressors,” so add the concept of slurs to the list of things exclusionists don’t understand.)
*this was slightly before the “queer is a slur” discourse really geared up iirc, which, yeah, also came out of exclusionist and terf circles.
